Set Up Your Parent's Phone So It Actually Works in an Emergency

Your emergency plan is only as good as the phone in your parent's hand. Fix the settings in 30 minutes.

📖 12 min read

The best time to set up your parent's phone is during your India visit.

Plan your technical audit using our Visit Planning Tool.

Visit Planner

Your entire emergency plan — the Emergency Card, the hospital list, the sibling WhatsApp group — depends on one thing: your parent being able to use their phone when it matters.

Most can't. The font is too small, the SOS button isn't set up, they can't find the contact, or they don't know how to share their location. Fix this during your next video call or India visit.

A Gentle Note

This guide assumes your parent has a smartphone (Android or iPhone). If they use a basic phone, skip to the "Basic Phone" section at the bottom. If they don't have a phone at all, the most important thing is a landline with emergency numbers written on paper next to it.

1. The 10-Minute Essentials

If you do nothing else, do these 5 things first. They cover 80% of emergencies.

Make the screen readable

Android:

  • Settings > Display > Font size > LARGEST
  • Settings > Display > Screen timeout > 5 mins
  • Settings > Display > Brightness > Auto ON

iPhone:

  • Settings > Display > Text Size > Maximum
  • Settings > Display > Bold Text > ON
  • Settings > Display > Auto-Lock > 5 mins
Set up Emergency SOS

Android:

Settings > Safety and Emergency > Emergency SOS. Enable "Press side button 5 times to call 112".

iPhone:

Settings > Emergency SOS. Turn on "Call with 5 Button Presses".

Test it: Have them practice the 5 presses while you are on a video call.

2. Set up Medical ID (Visible on Lock Screen)

This allows paramedics or bystanders to see life-saving info (allergies, medications, emergency contacts) without needing your parent's PIN.

What to enter:

  • Name: Full name
  • Blood group: e.g., O+
  • Allergies: e.g., Penicillin, Sulfa
  • Medications: Copy from your CareForAmma Medication List
  • Contacts: You (with + country code) and one local India contact

3. WhatsApp Setup (The Lifeline)

WhatsApp is how Indian families communicate. Make it easy for them.

  • Pin Your Chat: Long-press your chat and tap the pin icon. You should always be at the top.
  • Family Emergency Group: Create a group called "[Name] Emergency". Add all siblings and a trusted neighbour. Pin it. Rule: NO forwards, NO "Good Mornings". Only urgent info.
  • Teach the "Live Location": Walk them through: Chat > + > Location > Share Live Location > 8 hours. Practice this until they can do it in 15 seconds.

4. UPI / Digital Payments

Setting up Google Pay or PhonePe means your parent is never stuck if they lose their wallet or run out of cash for an auto-rickshaw or medicines.

  • Daily Limit: Set a daily UPI limit of ₹5,000 to prevent large scam losses.
  • Practice: Have them send ₹1 to you and you send it back. Do this 3 times.

5. Location Sharing

framing is key here: "This is so I can send help to exactly where you are if something happens. I'm not tracking you — I'm protecting you."

  • Google Maps: Open Google Maps > Profile > Location Sharing > Share with you > "Until you turn this off". This works across Android and iPhone.

6. Scam Protection

Elderly parents are the #1 target for phone scams in India.

  • Truecaller: Install it. Set it as default. It blocks 90% of scam calls automatically.
  • The "Code Word": Establish a family code word (e.g., "Tommy" or "Blueberry"). If anyone calls pretending to be you or says you are in trouble, your parent must ask for the code word. If they can't give it, hang up immediately.
