Your Parent Got Scammed â What to Do Right Now
If your parent lost money to a scam, the next few hours are critical. Here is how to report, recover, and protect them.
1. The First 30 Minutes
If your parent just lost money to a scam, the next 30 minutes matter. Banks can sometimes reverse transactions if you act fast enough.
Step 1: Stay calm and get the facts
- What happened exactly? Let your parent explain without interrupting.
- How much money was lost?
- How was it sent? (UPI, bank transfer, cash, card, cheque)
- When did it happen? (Today? This week? Last month?)
- Scammer details: phone number, UPI ID, or account number used.
Step 2: Call the bank immediately
This is the most urgent step. Call the customer care number on the back of your parent's card or the bank's official app.
- Tell them: "My parent's account has been compromised by fraud. I need to report an unauthorised transaction and request a reversal."
- Ask them to freeze the account temporarily if large amounts are at risk.
- Get a complaint reference number and write it down.
- If UPI fraud: Also call the helpline for Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm.
Step 3: Report on the Cyber Crime Portal
Go to cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930 (available 24/7). This is the official Indian government portal.
- File a complaint online under "Financial Fraud".
- This generates a complaint number that banks use to process reversals.
- Speed is everything: Filing within 24 hours gives the best chance of recovery.
2. How to Report (Step by Step)
1. National Cyber Crime Portal
Visit cybercrime.gov.in and click "Report Other Cyber Crime". Upload any evidence like screenshots of messages, call logs, and transaction receipts.
2. Your Parent's Bank Branch
If possible, have a local relative visit the branch with the cybercrime complaint number. Under RBI guidelines, if reported within 3 days, the bank must credit the amount back within 10 days while they investigate.
3. Local Police Station (FIR)
File a First Information Report (FIR). This is essential for insurance claims and legal proceedings. If they refuse, file through the State Police online portal.
4. RBI Ombudsman
If the bank refuses to reverse the transaction or does not respond within 30 days, file a complaint at cms.rbi.org.in.
3. Can You Get the Money Back?
Recovery depends on speed and the method of payment.
UPI Fraud (Google Pay, PhonePe)
Reported within 24 hours: Good chance. After 3 days: Very low chance as money is usually withdrawn.
Credit Card Fraud
High recovery rate. Dispute the charge within 30 days. Banks bear the liability if reported promptly.
Bank Transfer (NEFT/IMPS)
If reported same day, bank can sometimes stop settlement. Next day onwards depends on cybercrime portal freezes.
4. Common Scams in India
- KYC Blocked: "Your bank account will be blocked unless you share OTP now."
- Lottery/Prize: "You won 10 lakhs! Pay 5,000 processing fee to claim."
- Fake Police/CBI: "There is a case against you. Pay a fine via UPI to avoid arrest."
- Child in Trouble: "Your son/daughter is in hospital/jail. Send money immediately."
- UPI 'Receive' Scam: "I am sending you a refund, please approve the request." (Parent approves and money leaves their account).
- Bill Disconnection: "Pay your electricity bill at this link now or power will be cut."
5. Protecting Your Parent
Set Daily UPI Limits
Set a limit of 5,000-10,000 rupees in Google Pay or PhonePe. This limits the damage if a scam succeeds.
The Family Code Word
Choose a word only you know. If anyone calls claiming you are in trouble, your parent asks for the code word. No word = hang up.
Call Blocking
Install Truecaller and enable "Silence Unknown Callers" on their phone to block 90% of spam calls.
SMS Alerts
Ensure every transaction on every bank account triggers an SMS alert. Check if you can also receive these alerts.
Scam protection starts with phone configuration. See Phone Setup Guide
6. The Emotional Aftermath
The financial loss is one thing, but the emotional damage can be lasting. Your parent may feel deep shame or lose confidence in themselves.
