PHASE 1: THE FIRST HOUR

You just got the call. Your parent is in hospital. Here's what to do right now — in order.

Step 1: Get the basic facts

Call whoever informed you — relative, neighbour, or hospital. Get these five things:

  • 1. Which hospital? Full name and city.
  • 2. What happened? Fall? Chest pain?
  • 3. Current status? ER? Ward? ICU?
  • 4. Who is with them? Get their mobile.
  • 5. Treating doctor? Ask ground contact.

Step 2: Single point of contact

Establish ONE person at the hospital who can relay info and sign forms. Sibling, relative, or professional coordinator.

Step 3: Talk to the doctor

Ask for the doctor's direct number. Most Indian doctors will speak to family abroad — this is common and expected.

Step 4: Insurance and payment

Inform the hospital about insurance immediately. Delayed intimation is the #1 reason for claim rejection.

Understanding Insurance:

Knowing your policy's sub-limits and network hospitals is critical during admission.

Step 5: Alert family

Create a WhatsApp group with everyone who needs to know. Share the hospital and doctor details.

PHASE 2: THE FIRST 24 HOURS

Organization is key. Get a clear diagnosis, understand the financial estimate, and set a communication rhythm.

PHASE 3: THE FIRST WEEK

Acute phase is over. Monitor the daily bill, plan for discharge, and manage your own stress levels.

Should You Fly to India?

You should probably fly if:
  • Your parent is in ICU and prognosis is uncertain.
  • Major surgery is planned and consent is needed.
  • No reliable ground contact is available.
  • Your other parent is alone and struggling.
You can probably manage from abroad if:
  • Your parent is stable and in a regular ward.
  • A reliable relative or professional is handling ground coordination.
  • The stay is short with a clear discharge plan.
  • You have direct communication with the doctor.
